Aix-en-Provence is compact and walkable, with Hotel Negrecoste perfectly placed for exploring the old town. Immediately outside the hotel, Course Mirabeau is Aix’s most famous boulevard, a 440m avenue shaded by plane trees and lined with elegant townhouses, café terraces, and historic fountains. The surrounding Vieil Aix is populated by Baroque mansions, pretty squares, and the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. Art lovers can walk to Musée Granet, one of France’s leading provincial museums, and the Hotel de Caumont Centre d’Art. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, the main Provençal market fills nearby squares with local produce and antiques. Fans of Paul Cézanne can visit the Atelier Cézanne, preserved largely as he left it. Within a short drive, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire offers hiking and cycling trails, while golfers can choose from several 18 hole courses with views towards the Luberon. Marseille is just 40 minutes away, with its Old Port and Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, while Cassis provides access to the Calanques National Park’s limestone fjords and turquoise coves. To the north, the Luberon Regional Nature Park features celebrated villages including Lourmarin, Gordes, and Roussillon, reached in around 45 minutes to an hour.

The journey and how you get there
For a holiday to the Hotel Negrecoste, you can fly into Marseille Provence Airport, and collect a hire car for the 30 minute drive or take a private transfer. High-speed trains from other towns and cities in France arrive into Aix-en-Provence TGV station on the outskirts of the city, with taxis to the hotel taking around 25 minutes. A hire car is not necessary for exploring Aix-en-Provence itself, but is convenient if exploring the wider region or visiting the Hotel Negrecoste as part of a touring holiday.
