Luxury bespoke hotel holidays to Chateau de la Treyne, Dordogne
The five-star Château de la Treyne occupies a breathtaking position on limestone cliffs above the Dordogne River, where this fairytale castle from the 14th and 17th centuries combines centuries of French history with contemporary luxury. The fortress, originally built in 1342, was tragically burned during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, and restored by King Louis XIII in 1643, giving the hotel its Renaissance finish. The accommodation ranges from intimate castle rooms to grand suites, each entirely unique and individually decorated with period furnishings, antique tapestries, and warm lighting that enhances the historic atmosphere. Many rooms feature exceptional views over the Dordogne River or the formal French gardens, with south-facing chambers bathed in golden evening light. The Château’s 300-acre estate encompasses manicured gardens adorned with Medici vases, elaborate rose arrangements, and century-old cedars and Mexican honey-locust trees. An organic vegetable garden complete with free-range chickens and pigs supplies the hotel’s acclaimed kitchen, where Michelin-starred Chef Stephane Andrieux has been crafting menus celebrating Périgord flavours since 2001. Dining takes place in the grand Louis XIII salon or on the river-view terrace, where the exquisite cuisine in complemented by wines from the Château’s cellar. The heated infinity pool provides more relaxation with river views, whilst the tennis court and forest walking trails offer active pursuits among the downy oaks and truffle trees typical of the Causses de Quercy. Throughout the year, the Château hosts concert, art exhibitions, and theatre, often in collaboration with regional festivals, fulfilling a vital cultural role that draws both French and international visitors to this timeless haven of French elegance.

About Dordogne
The Dordogne region at the heart of Perigord abounds in clear, flowing rivers, craggy hillsides of golden rock, hill top villages and castles built of the local stone, and attractive houses with grey slate roofs and mini turrets, with vines trained along their walls. A holiday in the Dordogne is ideal for those seeking a combination of activity, sightseeing and relaxation. There are pre-historic grottoes to explore, market towns of mediaeval houses and cobbled streets such as Sarlat, numerous sporting activities such as riding and cycling and castles to visit. Plus, the gastronomy of the Dordogne is renowned for its truffles, foie gras, `magret de canard` and walnuts. The Dordogne region possesses much of the essential delights for a visitor to France. A self-drive touring holiday is an excellent way to travel to the Dordogne, perhaps discovering the chateaux and manor houses of northern France along the way. A quicker alternative is to travel to the region by train, collecting a hire-car on arrival which allows you to explore at your own pace.
