Luxury bepoke holidays to The Villas at Stonehaven, Tobago

With stunning vistas over the tropical rainforest as it spills down to Stonehaven Bay, The Villas at Stonehaven can be found cut into the hillside on the west coast of Tobago. In an area named Black Rock, the resort's mere 14 villas sit within 10-acre landscaped gardens and provide an isolated haven that guarantees privacy and exclusivity. Characterised by a pink-walled, French-colonial style, each of the 14 villas takes in ocean views from balconies and a private infinity pool. Choose from three- or four-bedroom categories with the capacity to accommodate up to seven adults, making them well suited to large groups and family gatherings. Interiors are fresh and airy to suit the climate, with patio doors opening onto large terraces that encourage outdoor living. Certain services render it unnecessary to venture beyond your own private sanctuary, with a daily housekeeper on hand from 9am to 2pm and an in-room spa service allowing for private pampering. In-room dining is also possible, and the provision of kitchen facilities means that self-catering is possible. Yet the option to dine elsewhere within the resort is still open. Beside a half moon infinity pool with immersive views, Pavilion Restaurant, open Tuesday to Sunday, is the destination for lunches and dinners of fine Caribbean and international flavours. There is also the Clubhouse bar and lounge, where exotic cocktails can be devoured in a cosy setting that opens onto a vast veranda through patio doors. This is where daily happy hours take place. Access the beaches of Stonehaven Bay in a five-minute drive for that sand-between-the-toes feeling, while water sports such as sailing, windsurfing or exquisite snorkelling and scuba adventures can be pursued. Tennis courts are available nearby, as are two 18-hole championship golf courses. Visit in March and April to witness the spectacle of giant leatherback turtles lumbering ashore to lay their eggs.

About Tobago

An Expressions tailor-made holiday to Tobago is the chance to explore a typical picture-postcard Caribbean island with white sand beaches, palm fringed, bordering turquoise blue waters. Quite laid-back, relaxed and friendly, Tobago offers beautiful beaches, rainforest interiors like much of the Windward Islands, good water sports, some of the best diving in the Caribbean and an easy-going environment for a luxury beach holiday. If you venture away from the wonderful beaches you will still see the signs of the plantation island Tobago once was at places such as Moriah and Les Coteaux. Tobago still has traditional Caribbean fishing villages at Castara and Parlatuvier towards the north east of the island. Tobago is an excellent island for a relaxing beach holiday but also worthwhile combining with a livelier and island such as Barbados.

Highlights of Tobago

Carnival culminating with Mardi Gras, Carrington Street in Scarborough with its rum shops and roti stands, the fishing villages of Castara and Parlatuvier, Jemma’s classic West Indian kitchen on the waterfront in Speyside (no alcohol served), Pigeon Point beach and sunset-watching from the quay, Buccoo Reef for snorkellers and scuba divers, Mauby is a local drink like ginger beer, Carib and Stag are the local beers, Roti - often spicy due to the Indian origins of many Trinidadians and filled with vegetable, chicken or shrimp curry, handicrafts such as batik and paintings at the Cotton House, Bacolet Street.

Travel around Tobago

The roads in the south and west of the island are fine but become less well maintained in the north and east and there are parts of the island that are only accessible in the dry season and only then by 4-wheel drive vehicles. You can hire cars and jeeps as well as mountain bikes. The island is well worth exploring but take a good map and check locally before you venture into more remote parts about the quality of the roads.
