Out and about nearby
The island of St Lucia is small enough to maintain the rustic tropical island feel, but large enough to provide a huge range of day-time and evening activities. The capital of the island, Castries, is situated in the crater of an extinct volcano, and so offers excellent scenery as well as a real Caribbean feel. Here, you can also look around the market of fruit, veg, and handicrafts such as pottery. Derek Walcott Square offers a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful views, and colonial architecture. Pigeon Island National Historic Park is the first of its kind in St Lucia, joined to the mainland by a causeway; it is home to two stunning white sandy beaches, abundant tropical plant and wildlife, an eclectic local restaurant, and a network of ruins. The resort also offers sailing, snorkelling, and diving trips that help guests become better acquainted with the Caribbean sealife, amongst the reef of Anse Cochon or in the clear waters around Saline Point. Inland excursions take you past waterfalls, the Pitons, and over volcanoes; or, go birdwatching in the forest, or make your own chocolate on a historic cocoa estate.

Luxury bepoke holidays to Calabash Cove, St Lucia
The five-star Calabash Cove Resort & Spa Hotel is tucked away amidst the steep sloping coastline of north-west St Lucia, with only 26 rooms. The infinity pool and main buildings are sheltered on one side by rich tropical vegetation, and look out across the sea, just feet away, on the other. The main pool is the focal point of the resort; an irregular shape to accommodate for the Swim-Up Bar and the individual steps from each of the Swim-Up Junior Suites. The pool terrace provides some of the resort's best views, as the pathways and lawns slope away to the seafront accommodation below. The Sunset Ocean View Junior Suites are housed in the main hotel building and capture the most extensive panoramas, from the lapping waves below to the bays, beaches, and hills opposite. Down on the seafront are the Water's Edge Cottages, which have the most Caribbean flavour in their abundance of wood and warm colours. Their decked terraces sit just a stone's throw from the water, and open out onto a small plunge pool. All room types combine spaciousness with a sense of seclusion and peace and quiet that comes with being at an adults-only hotel. At lunchtime, choose from a selection of fresh, light, Caribbean dishes at the Swim-Up Pool Bar, complete with sea-view deck. In the evenings (though also open at breakfast and lunch), dine on the stunning terrace of Windsong Restaurant, famed to be one of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. Here, international cuisine, including Asian flavours, is combined with local, authentic ingredients. Seafood takes pride of place, seasoned with fresh, invigorating spices. As you eat and sample the selection of wines available at the restaurant, watch the sun go down behind the Piton Mountains. After dinner, try the seasonal range of beers and wines available at the C Bar. The expertly-designed treatments at the TI Spa have been influenced by St Lucian tradition as well as European expertise, and all products are made from local, organic products. Guests can choose to enjoy their treatment under the picturesque sea-view wooden gazebo, on the boardwalk, or in your own suite. When planning your day trips from Calabash Cove, consult the hotel staff, who can assist in organising a range of activities, from sailing and sunset cruises, to mud baths and hikes in the forest.

About St Lucia
An Expressions tailor-made holiday to St Lucia is an opportunity to explore a lush, fertile island of volcanic peaks, rainforest and banana plantations which stands at the heart of the Windward Islands. Bitterly contested in bygone centuries by the British and French, St Lucia’s history is reflected today in the creole architecture and cuisine and the impossibly difficult to understand patois. The great range of luxury hotels and resorts on the island ensures that there is the perfect destination for every type of holiday. For example, Anse Chastanet is a charming hotel which offers a true flavour of the Caribbean whilst existing in harmony with its natural surroundings, whilst Sugar Beach offers luxurious accommodation with modern facilities in a stunning location. The character and aspect of the island of St Lucia between the north around Castries and the south around Soufrière is vastly different. In the north you have the bays, coves and sheltered harbours, white sandy beaches and tourist resorts whereas the south is famous for the volcanic, forest-covered Pitons, sulphur springs and rain forest. The north of St Lucia will appeal if you want a luxury Caribbean beach holiday with comfortable, contemporary accommodation and the possibility of venturing out for days, and the south is to be recommended for those who want the experience of life in a lush, tropical environment with the close proximity of the rainforest.
Highlights of St Lucia
Banana plantations. Creole architecture and gaily coloured houses in the villages. Jazz festival in May. Creole dishes of plantain, breadfruit, yam and christophene. Exuberant flowers, parrots and humming birds. Lush rainforest walks. Waterfalls, sulphur springs and botanical gardens. The poetry of Nobel prize winner Derek Walcott. Fishing towns of Anse la Raye, Canaries and Soufriere. Boat trips along the coast are also possible and afford breath-taking views of the mountains.
Travel around St Lucia
The west coast road from Castries to Soufrière has a good surface and width and just winds up and down the length of the coast. The scenery is dramatic and well worth experiencing by hire car. Signposting in Castries is almost non-existent so be armed with a detailed map but be prepared to get lost a little. South of Castries, Soufrière and Hewanorra airport are well signposted.
