Luxury bespoke holidays and tours to Relais San Maurizio, Piemonte

The Relais San Maurizio is a stunning 5 star boutique hotel which was once a monastery dating from the 17th Century located in a small village in the Langhe region, at the heart of Piemonte, renowned for its exceptional wine and cuisine. The region is home to the great reds such as Barolo and Barbaresco and also to the famous white truffle. The landscape is dotted with mediaeval towers and fortresses. The Relais San Maurizio sits amid its own parkland of ancient olive trees, spruce, larch and beech and close to the main building are landscaped gardens of lawn and flower beds. The former monks' cells and stables have been converted to 31 unique rooms and suites at the Relais San Maurizio, which overlook the gardens. The historic stone and brick of the building have been preserved and repaired and act as the foundation for luxurious, contemporary soft furnishings. The Relais San Maurizio hotel boasts a fine Michelin starred restaurant, called 'Guido da Costigliole' located in the cellars of the monastery with exposed stonework where the owner Lidia Alciati and her son Andrea blend Piedmontese tradition with modern elements using rich white truffles from Alba and specially-reared local meat. Pre-dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the relaxing Hemingway bar, named after the author who travelled through the region in 1948 to taste the best vermouths of the region. In the fine summer months guests can take advantage of the outdoor pool and sun terrace, with its panoramic views of the surrounding hills and vineyards. For other seasons or times, there is an indoor heated pool too. This works well with the superb spa, La Via del Sale Medical and Beauty Spa, where the treatments are based around the beneficial properties of salt. A stay here at the Relais San Maurizio affords the best of all worlds with its fine dining, beautiful facilities and comfortable rooms. In addition, it is perfect as a base for exploring the region and soaking up new experiences from truffle hunting to wine tasting, from hot air ballooning to cookery lessons.

About Piemonte

An Expressions tailor-made holiday to Piemonte beckons lovers of wine and food, art and architecture and dramatic, natural but also gloriously cultivated landscapes. Piemonte is essentially a country region of alpine peaks in the north, flat rice-producing river valleys further south, rolling vineyards with attractive villages, forested hills dotted with mediaeval castles and almost at its centre the city of Turin, known throughout the world as a great industrial centre but in fact, outstandingly rich in architectural gems, both modern and in particular Baroque. North of Turin is the Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, with miles of unspoiled natural scenery of mountain peaks and meadows, of rare wildlife and flowers. The splendid palaces, parks and hunting lodges of the Princes of Savoy can be visited in the countryside near Turin on your holiday. Our Piemonte hotels are situated in the remarkable wine-producing regions of the Langhe and Asti, renowned for their beautiful scenery, magnificent wines and fine gastronomy.

Turin, the regional capital, is a fascinating city of Baroque architecture and famous for its association with Fiat cars. Visit the car museum, the Mole Antonelli for a panoramic view. Visit some of the beautiful 18th Century House of Savoy palaces, many built by Filippo Juvarra, including Rivoli, Venaria Reale and Mandria. North of Turin is the subalpine region of Canavese with numerous castles many of which have been opened to the public very recently such as the Castello di Masino, now carefully restored. Lace is produced in the Valsesia. Alba is the centre of the white truffle and of course the local wines (Barolo, Barbera etc) should be tasted and purchased. Cuneo holds a market in the Piazza Galimberti every Tuesday.
