Luxury bespoke hotel holidays to Gardena Grodnerhof Hotel & Spa in the Italian Alps
The family-owned Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa has welcomed guests to Val Gardena for over a century, rebuilt in 2001 to create a sophisticated mountain retreat that honours Tyrolean tradition through contemporary Alpine design. Blonde wood, black stone, and white linens define interiors decorated in neutral tones, whilst the three-floor Gardena Spa forms the hotel's centrepiece with its 17 metre indoor pool bathed in natural light, outdoor whirlpool offering year-round mountain views, and comprehensive sauna facilities, including Finnish sauna, aromatic steam bath, biosauna, and a dedicated ladies-only area. The location places guests just 150 metres from Ortisei's village centre and a two minute walk from ski lifts, providing immediate access to the Dolomiti Superski network's 500km of slopes and the legendary Sellaronda circuit that circumnavigates the Sella massif across four mountain passes. Dining reaches Michelin-starred heights at Anna Stuben, where Chef Reimund Brunner elevates South Tyrolean flavours with refined techniques and fresh regional ingredients, earning the restaurant one Michelin star and four Gault & Millau toques, whilst the main Gardena Restaurant serves Mediterranean, Italian, and regional cuisine throughout the day with particular praise for its generous breakfast buffet featuring homemade pastries, organic ingredients, and sparkling wine. The hotel sits in the heart of Ortisei, the main town of Val Gardena, where 84% of residents speak Ladin as their primary language - a 2,000-year-old Rhaeto-Romance language. Beyond winter skiing, summer transforms the Dolomites into a paradise for hikers, with trails ranging from gentle valley walks to challenging high-altitude routes through the Puez-Odle Nature Park, whilst the village's woodcarving tradition continues in workshops throughout the pedestrian streets. The 64 rooms and suites occupy terraced levels with balconies overlooking either the village or surrounding mountains, ranging from spacious, comfortable rooms to luxury chalet-style suites, with premium rooms featuring traditional Tyrolean stoves and large living areas.
