Out and about nearby

To make the most of your time in Negombo, be sure to spend at least one afternoon in the city itself. Take a trip down the Dutch Canal to experience first hand an important part of the city's culture and to get a sweeping view of many of the buildings. Perhaps also visit the impressive St Mary's Church, which has a strikingly European architectural style. The natural landscape can be appreciated at the Muthurajawela Marsh and at Negombo Beach. You can scratch the surface of Sri Lankan architectural heritage by visiting one of the many small temples and monuments, including the Angurukaramulla Temple and the Abhayasekararama Temple. For an insight into the city's colonial history, visit the Dutch Clock Tower and the Dutch Fort. A self-guided tour may be the most rewarding way of seeing the city, following whichever streets takes your fancy, and stopping off wherever catches your eye. The Main Fish Market is vast and sprawling, and makes an excellent way to experience the Sri Lankan way of life.
