Luxury opera holiday to the Verona Opera Festival
You arrive at Verona airport and are transferred by private car with driver to your hotel in the city centre. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the city.
The day is yours to continue the exploration of the city, perhaps using our personally compiled Helpful Hints for guidance of places to visits or restaurants to try. Then, in the evening, depending on the performance of the opera you have chosen, enjoy a splendid occasion in the Verona Arena.
There is time today to travel out of the city to experience the nearby countryside, perhaps with an optional excursion by car or train to Lake Garda or the Valpolicella vineyards. You may have opted for a second performance of the opera this evening.
Depending on the time of your return flight, you may have some free time in Verona before your private car transfer returns you to the airport. Or, you may be extending your stay in Italy and travelling on to another destination.

Luxury opera holiday to the Verona Opera Festival
About Verona
An Expressions tailor-made holiday to Verona incorporates the history and wonder of this ancient city. Verona has had a varied and turbulent history throughout the ages from Roman times to the 20th Century, but it is now considered one of the major cities of northern Italy and a cultural centre in its own right. Verona’s main attraction has to be its Roman Amphitheatre; the Arena di Verona was completed in around 30AD and is the 3rd largest amphitheatre in Italy after the Colosseum and the Arena in Capua, south of Rome. The Verona Opera Festival is renowned all over the world and is an absolute for must for any opera aficionados holidaying in the area from June to September. The experience of a stage side seat within the Arena, listening to a favourite opera, has to be a highlight of any stay in or around Verona. Shakespeare based three of his plays here, but of course, it is Romeo and Juliet which has truly made Verona one of the most romantic cities in Italy and the residence believed to be that of Juliet’s family, the Capulets, can be visited today and is even the a wedding venue for those wishing to tie the knot in this romantic setting.
Cultural highlights of Verona
The Arena di Verona in the main Piazza Bra, Juliet’s house, the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, Ponte Scaligero, the Roman Theatre.
Festivals in Verona
The annual Opera Festival throughout the summer months is hosted in the famous Arena di Verona. It is essential to book early for specific operas in order to avoid disappointment. Carnevale is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday and is a magnificent display of floats and costumes. The wine festival ‘Vinitaly’ is hosted in Verona in April and is a must for wine connoisseurs.
Gastronomy in Verona
As with most cities in the Veneto, the food tends to be hearty and is more meat and game based. Horse meat is still popular and can be found on many menus. Otherwise, large spaghetti or ‘bigoli’ are often served with duck or liver-based sauces. The tall ‘Pandoro’ cake is traditional here at Christmas, literally translated as ‘golden bread’. The Veneto is one of the largest DOC wine producing areas of Italy and numerous wines from Soave, Bardolino and Valpolicella can be sampled relatively inexpensively in all restaurants and bars.
Travel around Verona
It is easy to get about by bus or taxi in Verona. Alternatively, all the main sites are within a maximum half an hour’s walk of each other and the city centre is mainly pedestrianized.
