Stavanger, Norway’s fourth largest city, lies just 15 minutes away, with its beautifully preserved Gamle Stavanger district featuring 173 white wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, recognised by UNESCO as one of Norway’s cities worthy of preservation. The Stavanger Maritime Museum offers fascinating insight into the region’s industrial heritage, whilst Stavanger Cathedral, dating from 1125, stands as Norway’s oldest and only mediaeval cathedral still retaining its original architecture. The iconic Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) rises 604m above Lysefjord, approximately 40 minutes away by car, recognised by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s most breathtaking viewpoints. Kjerag, another dramatic mountain peak at 1,110m, offers challenging hikes, with the famous Kjeragbolten bolder suspended between cliff faces. Luxury bespoke hotel holidays to Hotel Sola Strand, Southern Norway
Since opening in 1914, the four-star Hotel Sola Strand has welcomed guests to its distinctive position on the dunes overlooking Solastranden Beach and the North Sea, where over a century of hospitality meets the rugged beauty of Norway’s southwestern coast. The hotel, part of the HEIMR Collection, occupies a commanding location on the 2.5 kilometre stretch of golden sand, and combines its maritime location with historic character across 142 bright and spacious rooms. The property treasures its past, displaying illustrated newspaper books dating from 1840 and the figurehead Mathilde Christiane salvaged from a Swedish barque that wrecked on the Jæren coast in 1822. At the hotel’s heart, the original fireplace from 1914 continues to crackle with burning wood, creating an atmosphere that has characterised this coastal retreat for generations. Dining takes place in the Montroyal Restaurant, housed within a refurbished cigar room from an early 1900s cruise ship, where lunch buffets showcase regional ingredients, seasonal specialities, and the bounty of Norway’s coastline. The Strandbaren beach bar maintains a relaxed atmosphere throughout the day, with outdoor seating on sun terraces facing the sea, and serving stone-oven pizzas at weekends. The Nordsjøbadet Spa provides a comprehensive wellness experience, with an indoor swimming pool, three distinct saunas, a cold plunge pool, and treatments rooms offering massages, facials, and algae body wraps that draw on the natural properties of the coastal environment. During the summer months, guests can borrow bicycles to explore the surrounding area or try windsurfing at the Activity Centre, whilst the expansive sandy shoreline invites long walks regardless of season, with the sound of the North Sea providing a constant backdrop to this coastal haven.

About Southern Norway
Our Southern Norway area covers the the regions of Telemark, Sorlandet and Stavanger that combine to serve as a transition between Oslo in the east, the rugged North Sea coast and the fjords in the west and combine both the mountain plateau of the Hardangervidda in the north with its rich variety of wildlife including the country’s largest herd of wild reindeer, and the southern coastline of Sorlandet, composed of pretty villages, harbours, quaysides and a haven for fishing and swimming. Between valleys and lakes, the landscape is home to ancient fairy tales and folklore, historic buildings and well-trodden pathways dating back centuries. Kristiansand in the south is an attractive town and former stronghold on the coast, there is a particularly striking stave church at Heddal, dating from the 12th Century, and along the coast are charming towns such as Risor, Grimstad and Mandal, each with clapboard houses, narrow streets and secluded beaches. At Norway’s most southerly point is Lindesnes lighthouse, and where the Skaggerak and the North Sea meet, often with great force. Stavanger itself is a vibrant university town with street art and great food. Two highlights in the Stavanger region are Sola beach and the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) which towers 604 metres above Lysefjord.
