The compact town of Grimstad is known as “the city of poets” for its association with Henrik Ibsen, who lived and worked here as a young man. The Ibsen Museum, housed in the old pharmacy where Ibsen served his apprenticeship, sites just minutes from the hotel and provides insight into his early struggles and first play. Grimstad’s white wooden houses, narrow cobbled lanes and harbourfront create a charming backdrop for strolls, whilst the town’s archipelago of rocky islands and sheltered coves can be reached by seasonal beach boats or kayaks. Dømmesmoen Park, a short drive away, features gardens, woodland trails, a 500-year-old oak tree, and the Norwegian Horticultural Museum with Ibsen’s herb garden. Raet National Park protects coastal heaths, beech forests, and rounded stone beaches along the Grimstad shoreline, including the accessible Hasseltangen area. The coastal town of Arendal lies 30 minutes east, with its preserved Tyholmen district, lively Pollen harbour basin, and contemporary art galleries, whilst Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park, Norway’s most popular family attraction, is 40 minutes west.

Luxury bespoke hotel holidays to Home Hotel Grimstad, near Kristiansand
Home Hotel Grimstad occupies a central position on Grimstad’s main square, where the building’s history spans several construction phases and includes a tunnel carved through the rocky hillside behind the property. This tunnel preserves a slope once walked by writer Knut Hamsun, and now houses a small exhibition about Fuhr AS, a historic Norwegian wine business, whose cellars once stored up to 2 million litres of wine. The hotel’s 98 rooms are distributed through the charming building, each designed with Scandinavian simplicity and a homely feel that reflects the hotel’s informal, welcoming character. Soft furnishings, warm colours, and comfortable seating areas in public spaces create a relaxed atmosphere, whilst many rooms offer views over the town square, harbour, or surrounding streets. The hotel’s dining concept revolves around value and convenience, with breakfast, afternoon fika and a light evening meal all included in the room rate. Breakfast features hot and cold buffet options, with traditional and organic selections, whilst the afternoon brings complimentary waffles or cakes with coffee and tea. The simple evening buffet provides a homely supper rather than formal restaurant dining. A rooftop terrace offers elevated views across Grimstad’s white wooden rooftops towards the sea, providing a pleasant spot to relax in fine weather. The hotel’s greatest asset is its location, on the doorstep of Grimstad’s compact old town, with the Ibsen Museum, harbourfront, independent shops, and waterfront just minutes away on foot.

About Southern Norway
Our Southern Norway area covers the the regions of Telemark, Sorlandet and Stavanger that combine to serve as a transition between Oslo in the east, the rugged North Sea coast and the fjords in the west and combine both the mountain plateau of the Hardangervidda in the north with its rich variety of wildlife including the country’s largest herd of wild reindeer, and the southern coastline of Sorlandet, composed of pretty villages, harbours, quaysides and a haven for fishing and swimming. Between valleys and lakes, the landscape is home to ancient fairy tales and folklore, historic buildings and well-trodden pathways dating back centuries. Kristiansand in the south is an attractive town and former stronghold on the coast, there is a particularly striking stave church at Heddal, dating from the 12th Century, and along the coast are charming towns such as Risor, Grimstad and Mandal, each with clapboard houses, narrow streets and secluded beaches. At Norway’s most southerly point is Lindesnes lighthouse, and where the Skaggerak and the North Sea meet, often with great force. Stavanger itself is a vibrant university town with street art and great food. Two highlights in the Stavanger region are Sola beach and the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) which towers 604 metres above Lysefjord.
