Our opinion
Abama is a large, scenic and spacious resort with a strong flavour of Africa.
Hotel description
Abama is a large five-star 'Gran Luxe' complex of hotels and villas situated in an impressive cliff top situation in Guía de Isora, on the west coast of Tenerife on the lower hillsides of Mt. Teide, the highest mountain on Spanish soil. This is the area with the best preserved flora and fauna on the island, and consequently the resort offers extensive gardens and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean towards the island of La Gomera. Close to the Tropic of Cancer, Abama enjoys a mild subtropical climate throughout the year, with a very high number of hours of sunshine. Though it is a large resort, Abama’s construction has made use of a careful combination of subtropical architecture and natural features, with an attention to detail which is also present in all its services. At its heart is the Citadel, its terracotta colours and mudbrick-style architecture reminiscent of the Moorish kasbahs of the nearby mainland of Africa. Most of the rooms are here, while scattered around it in the gardens are the more secluded and exclusive Villas; however, all the rooms and suites have spacious terraces or balconies with wonderful views. Food plays a major part in the life of Abama, and there are no fewer than ten restaurants to choose from. The main gastronomic restaurant, M.B, is under the supervision of 3-star Michelin chef Martín Berasategui, but plenty of other tastes are also catered for; Kabuki, for example, displays a minimalist décor and original and innovative style in its adaptation of Japanese dishes and aromas to western tastes, with a fusion of local ingredients and Japanese traditions. Interesting too is El Mirador, built in Balinese style with thatched roofs, pillars and magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean and La Gomera Island, specialising in seafood, fish and rice. Other establishments in and around the resort and on the beach offer everything from fish, pasta and parilla to macrobiotic and dietetic menus. Abama’s splendid situation and innovative construction provide ample space for seclusion as well as a large variety of activities and all the facilities to be expected of a resort of this size and quality.
