An idyllic sanctuary amongst a 550-million year old virgin rainforest, The Datai is situated on the north-western tip of the beautiful Malay island of Langkawi. The resort has been largely crafted from local materials and blends into the rainforest backdrop marvellously. The interiors are contemporary yet undeniably Malay, making use of dark wood and rich colours to provide a warm and welcoming retreat. The resort faces the turquoise Andaman Sea and is positioned above a secluded cove and its own sandy beach. One of the two swimming pools enjoys a superb position elevated among the rainforest canopy, surrounded by a terrace from which you can revel in the breathtaking views. The Datai truly makes the most of its magnificent position, whether by offering guests ample for relaxation, or with excursions that allow you to better experience the vibrant natural surroundings. Morning walks are lead through the rainforest by Ishad, the resort’s resident naturalist, offering a fantastic opportunity to see some of its rich and diverse species of flora and fauna. A truly memorable and highly recommended experience is the Rainforest by Night walk, where you may see monkeys, flying squirrels, and hornbills. Mountain bikes can be borrowed to explore the island and the resort also has a water sports pavilion that enables guests to enjoy the clear waters that surround Langkawi. The Mandara Spa is a place of serenity and relaxation, tucked away under the rainforest canopy by a stream and made up of four pavilions. An extensive range of treatments are offered here, including the Datai Massage, a fusion of Shiatsu, Thai, Swedish, Balinese and Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi techniques in which two massage therapists work in synchronisation. There are three restaurants at the resort, including The Pavilion, which serves authentic Thai food in an elevated, open-air setting, high up in the rainforest canopy. Guests can also dine al fresco by the sea at the Beach Club or enjoy local specialities throughout the day in the Dining Room. The guestrooms are located in the main building and in villas and are set amongst the verdant rainforest. The ample living and sleeping space is decorated in rich colours with wood furnishings that work in harmony with the environment. The Datai is a magnificent resort that has an enchanting position, tucked away amongst the rainforest.
