Italy possesses a wealth of gardens to enjoy. Many beautiful gardens have been created in the grounds of historic, private villas and are only open to the public by special arrangement or at special times of the year. Other, formal gardens are open year-round to the public and are equally not to be missed. Three regions in Italy are the most prolific in terms of gardens and each region, because of its geography and climate, has a distinctly different character and therefore vegetation. These regions are the Italian Lakes, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast with Capri. The Lakes and the Amalfi Coast area have long had associations as playgrounds of the rich and famous, dating back to the Roman Empire. Later these areas, and then Tuscany, all rich in beautiful vegetation, were visited by poets and writers artists and musicians as well as wealthy foreigners, often British, who made their homes here and worked with the native vegetation to develop a style that is frequently a mixture of classical and romantic, formal and informal. Another important region in the north of the country is the Veneto, where you will find terraced gardens as well as wilder English-style parks, many of which have been influenced by the great Palladio. At the heart of Italy, in the vicinity of Rome are truly amazing gardens which have shaped the design and structure of gardens the world over since the 16th century. On the whole plants are less important than structure in this region, with key features including terraces, steps, symmetry and the use of water. We have developed a range of holidays for small groups which visit the gardens in these regions with a local guide. The holidays are for a maximum of 14 people with travel in a small luxury coach, and take place on set departure dates throughout the year.In The Italian Lakes, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast with Capri and Ischia we have also developed wonderful garden tour itineraries for you to enjoy as an individual, combining a luxurious holiday in one of our nearby hand-picked hotels with visits to formal and informal gardens. Please note that certain times of the year may be better than others in the respective regions and the need also to allow for times when the gardens may be open.
