Travel by Train to the Amalfi Coast
Experience the romance of rail as you travel through Europe by train, via a couple of nights in historic Rome, through to Naples for your final destination of the spectacular Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi coast is best known for its dramatic coastal scenery, where tiny fishing villages hug the cliffs and rocky coves.
Luxuriant vegetation thrives in the favourable climate and the regional cuisine is light and simple, based on local fish and shellfish, lemons and oranges, mozzarella and fresh herbs. There are numerous excursion and sightseeing possibilities for your holiday including the islands of Procida, Capri and Ischia, the city of Naples, the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the romance of Ravello and the bustle of Sorrento.
For this itinerary by train we have selected the perfect combination of the Hotel Mascagni in Rome and the Hotel Poseidon in Positano. There are plenty of other delightful hotels in Rome and along the Amalfi Coast, so please ask us for alternative suggestions.
The Hotel Mascagni in Rome is a small and welcoming hotel, located off the Via Nazionale, close to the Trevi Fountain, Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps. The hotel is housed in an early 20th century palazzo and is decorated throughout in a traditional style. As there are no more than six rooms per floor, there is a real sense of a personal and intimate atmosphere. The hotel also has a bar and small restaurant, where breakfast is served. Hotel Mascagni offers a traditional and comfortable base for a sightseeing visit to this wonderful city.
The Hotel Poseidon is one of our favourite hotels and one that is consistently highly praised. A 4-star family-run hotel, the Hotel Poseidon is situated in the romantic, terraced town of Positano. There is a very good restaurant at the Hotel Poseidon with service inside and outdoors on the terrace, overlooking Positano and the sea. The hotel is ideal for romantics, sun-lovers and those wishing to explore this beautiful stretch of coastline. Positano has managed to preserve its atmosphere as a quaint artists’ and fishing village; coaches are forbidden and there are no large hotels. It has numerous art galleries, clothes shops and craft stores, restaurants, cafés and bars, all of which complement the charming ambience of the town.
