Travel by Train to Lake Como
Experience the romance of rail travel as you travel through Europe by train to beautiful Lake Como in Italy. Lake Como is located amongst stunning scenery in the foothills of the Alps, just a short drive from Milan. We suggest a resort-based holiday, in one of two charming grand hotels, right on the banks of Lake Como.
Located on the western shore of Lake Como facing the pretty resort of Bellagio, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo Palace is a charming example of turn-of-the-century Liberty-style architecture. The hotel can be found just outside the village of Tremezzo and is a favourite spot for holidaying because of its particularly mild climate and beautiful gardens. This part of the lake is called the Azalea Riviera and the scenery is resplendent with whites and pinks when these flowers blossom in late winter and early spring. Villa Carlotta and its famous botanical gardens are just next door to the hotel and a wonderful place to visit throughout the year. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo Palace offers luxurious accommodation at excellent value for money.
The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is famous for three things - its favourable position on the banks of Lake Como in the picturesque town of Bellagio, just at the point where all three fingers of Lake Como join; its lush gardens of palms and luxuriant shrubs; and its extremely well preserved architecture and interior decoration.
The views of the lake are quite magical, and can be enjoyed from the gardens and terrace, the lounge and those of the rooms which are at the front of the hotel. The hotel is just a couple of minutes’ walk to the pretty squares and waterfront of Bellagio.
The train journey
You can leave London in the afternoon in order to take the overnight sleeper service from Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan, arriving at 05.38 the next morning. If that is a bit too early an arrival for you in Milan, then another option is to take the daytime service on either at 14.41 from Paris, arriving in Milan at 21.45 or at 12.45 on Saturdays and Sundays, arriving in Milan at 19.47. We would then arrange for you to have a transfer from the station to your hotel.
The return sleeper leaves Milan at 23.38 and arrives in Paris Gare de Lyon at 09.29. You can then be on a Eurostar from the Gare du Nord at any time from about 11 am onwards. If you would like to experience the daytime service then a train leaves Milan at 11.10 Mondays to Fridays and arrives in Paris at the Gare de Lyon at 18.19 (an hour earlier on Saturdays and Sundays). You can then take a Eurostar at about 8pm back to London.
