Our opinion
The Azia Club and Spa represents style, privacy and indulgence in an escapist retreat.
Hotel description
The Azia Club and Spa, part of a larger resort with a wide-ranging appeal, has a feel of sophisticated escapism, stylish barefoot living and understated luxury with unobtrusive service. The resort has been built as three different hotels on adjacent grounds: the Azia Club and Spa is specifically designed for privacy and indulgence. The symbol of the hotel is the Asphodel, the immortal flower of ancient Greek mythology, in which it stands for the ultimate happiness of the soul and was the first sight a soul longed to see at the gates of paradise. The Azia Resort and Spa is situated a few kilometres from the centre of Paphos, a pleasant little port of great antiquity and charm. Its west-facing outlook, unusual in Cyprus, provides guests with some sublime sunset views. Azia's sophisticated design has produced an atmosphere that is sensuous yet earthy, shaped by the natural beauty and history of Cyprus. Flower and leaf motifs are carved on the wood and stone of the buildings, and there is a profusion of indoor and outdoor plantings. Each area is influenced by a different chapter of the island’s history: the Murano glass, handpainted silk and gold leaf decoration of the main dining room represent the impact of the Venetian Republic, while the main lobby has the airiness suggestive of the open spaces of the agora of ancient Greece; the staircase banister resembles seaweed moving with the waves, the piano lobby bar is a beautiful reminder of the Colonial influence, and the main bar, in deep sensuous colours with finely carved wood and wrought-iron lamps, captures the fusion of Arab cultures on the island. With three hotels sharing the Azia Resort’s site there is a wealth of dining possibilities. There are five restaurants from which to choose, offering international gastronomy in the beautiful conservatory of the Cubes Garden, and a fusion of Mediterranean cuisines in the Cipro. The terrace of the Amphitheatre, surrounded by the impressive tropical gardens and overlooking the sea, provides an idyllic location for candle-lit dinners. The two bars also serve light snacks. The sybaritic Asphodel Spa offers a large number of treatments and uses the exclusive Elemis range of products. As well as its first-class pampering facilities, the easy access to golf, tennis and varied water sports makes the Azia Club and Spa an outstanding retreat with enough diversity to keep its guests contented for a week or longer.

Out and aboutnearby/local interest
Cyprus is rich in history and culture, and there are many historic sites well worth visiting in the Paphos area, with culture trails to Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Gothic remains. Paphos itself is a haven for watersports, diving and deep-sea fishing, or you can take to the air instead for a sightseeing flight. If you would like to combine your holiday with a few rounds of golf there are three 18-hole golf courses in the vicinity. Inland, the hills are quiet and unspoilt, with vineyards, olive trees, citrus groves and charming old villages where you’ll find the locals very friendly. There are plenty of opportunities here for hiking in the cooler months, and even skiing in winter.
