    Our opinion

An indulgent luxury resort set between the Indian Ocean and Mauritian sugar cane fields.

    Hotel description

In historic Balaclava on the west coast of Mauritius, the five star Westin Turtle Bay Mauritius is named after the idyllic stretch of sand and sea it overlooks. The crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean span the horizon in front of the resort, and the fields of sugar cane rustle in the gentle sea breeze behind it, creating a secluded bubble of tropical tranquillity. The hotel buildings are crafted out of local teak and marbled lava rocks, with wooden roofs, decked walkways, and sleek panels of glass that reflect the colour of the water and add a contemporary edge. Like individual floating islands, the resort restaurants, lobby, and guestrooms are separated by tiered expanses of water, interspersed with landscaped plumes of tropical foliage. The main infinity pool at Westin Turtle Bay Mauritius seems to merge with the sea, but is in fact separated by a thin stretch of sand, and is lined with shady areas, sun loungers, and tall palm trees. Half of the resort takes on a very adult feel, with the other half designed to cater for families as well as couples. Under the vaulted roofs of the interconnected islands, you will find the resort’s wide range of culinary options. At Seasonal Tastes, enjoy dinner on the terrace overlooking the sea. Live cooking stations turn high quality seasonal ingredients into an eclectic selection of international and local cuisine. At Kangan, sample the authentic, exotic Indian dishes that are prepared in the open kitchen, accompanied by soothing music and maharajah interior design. For a taste of Mauritian cuisine, dine at Fusion, where traditional cuisine is given an innovative, contemporary make-over. Casual dining options can be enjoyed at the Beach Grill, where each dish is custom-made to suit the guest, with lapping waves just metres away, and the sand between your toes. In the late afternoon or evening, spend an hour or two at the Mystique Beach Lounge and Bar or the Retreat, the resort’s main bar. At the end of a relaxing, indulgent day, retire to your room. Guestrooms at the Westin Turtle Bay Mauritius follow a light, breezy colour scheme that matches their stunning location. Crisp white sheets are accompanied by white ceilings, cream walls, and accents of turquoise on the cushions and rugs, and soft, natural green in the curtains and artworks. Polished and painted wooden furnishings bring a classical, traditional feel to the rooms that complements their luxurious yet homely design. Marble, dark wood, and standalone bath tubs in the en-suite bathrooms look out onto small courtyards in some rooms, which seems to extend the space and draw in more of the fresh air and sunlight while you relax at the end of the day. A particular highlight of the resort’s wellness facilities is the Heavenly Spa, surrounded by private gardens, and offering a collection of signature treatments professionally designed to reflect the natural beauty of Mauritius. A stay of a week or two at the Westin Turtle Bay Mauritius will invariably leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. We highly recommend this to both families and couples.

Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius, and is constantly buzzing with cosmopolitan life and culture. The central market is the focal point for many visitors due to the vibrant experience it offers. Alternatively, visit the historic Champ de Mars, the Place d’Armes, the Statue of Mahe de la Bourdonnais, the Government House, Aapravasi Ghat, the Caudan Waterfront, and, of course, Fort Adelaide. In the north of the island, visit the stunning beachfront and quaint streets of Grand Bay, the picturesque village of Cap Malheureux, and the tropical plants at Les Vergers of Labourdonnais at Mapou and the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. For stunning seascapes and water sports, head to Ile aux Cerfs, home to extensive sandy beaches and a tortoise farm. Mahebourg is one of the main fishing villages on the island, home to the National History Museum and Cavendish Bridge, and was the site of the only Napoleonic naval victory over the English in 1810. For exceptionally calm waters, head to the west of the island. Swim in the waters beside the lighthouse in Albion, relax on the beach at Flic en Flac, or visit the villages of Tamarin and Black River. For cultural, historic towns, head inland towards Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, and the Trou aux Cerfs volcano.
