Water sports in Sri Lanka
The Indian Ocean provides opportunities for surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling, diving and fishing off the west and south coasts between November and April.

The main centres for water sports are in Bentota and Hikkaduwa on the south-west coast and to a lesser extent in Negombo in the west and Mirissa in the south. Undercurrents and riptides, even in seemingly calm waters, mean that you need to be careful where and when you choose to partake in sea-based activities.
The best conditions for water sports in the sea in Sri Lanka are from December to April.
Surfing
The most popular areas for surfing are Hikkaduwa on the south-west coast and Arugam Bay on the east coast, though surfing can be enjoyed at many places along the west to south coasts. Weligama Bay in the south has good surfing waves and a sandy bottom (surfing lessons can be arranged by staff at the Weligama Bay resort.
Windsurfing
Less predictable, but the Sunshine Watersports centre in Bentota is run by Sri Lanka’s windsurfing champion.
Motorised Water Sports
Water-skiing, jet-skiing and banana boat rides are available at Bentota in a sheltered lagoon/estuary where the river meets the sea, and at Hikkaduwa.
Snorkelling
The Indian Ocean around Sri Lanka is inhabited by the likes of groupers, barracuda, manta rays and sea turtles as well as a host of tropical reef fish – creating a colourful kaleidoscope in the clear waters of the calm season. Snorkelling gear and glass bottom boats are available for viewing the reefs at Bentota/Beruwela and Hikkaduwa where you can see shoals of tropical fish, though the coral is damaged. The south coast is good for snorkelling and the hotels usually have snorkels and masks available. The dive centres at Unuwatuna and Mirissa also have snorkelling equipment for hire.
Diving
Sri Lanka is not known for its diving sites although there are opportunities for diving off shore. Diving centres with PADI qualified instructors can be found in Bentota, Hikkaduwa (coral reef and marine life), Negombo (wrecks and reef) and Unuwatuna/Mirissa in the south.
Deep Sea Fishing
Excursions are available, departing from Negombo or Mirissa.
